Namibia drops in open budget index

Improvements in Namibia’s national budgetary process in the last few years were not enough to bolster the country’s ranking in the latest edition of the foremost global comparative study.
Launched yesterday, the ‘Open Budget Survey 2015’ places Namibia in 55th place out of around 102 countries surveyed, with an overall score of 46 out of 100.
The grading considers the country somewhere between those countries believed to be doing too little to ensure transparency throughout their annual budget cycles, and those deemed to be doing enough.

Corridor group observes 15 year journey

The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of its efforts to promote Namibia as the number one logistics hub in the region.
The corridor group celebrated the milestone in the company of President Hage Geingob, Cabinet ministers and the business community last week.
The Head of State used the opportunity to pledge the government’s commitment to the WBCG’s ideals, highlighting its efforts to revamp the railways to boost trade.

Traditional healer could be acquitted

A traditional healer said to have been frequented by Mishake Muyongo, the exiled alleged leader of the so-called Caprivi rebellion, could not be linked to any treasonous activities, High Court Judge Elton Hoff said yesterday.
Judge Hoff said he was not satisfied that the State had proven the commission of overt and hostile acts by traditional healer George Kasange.
The witness who made allegations against Kasange could not even point Kasange out in court.

Ward funeral arrangements untrue

Terence Ward, the father of the late Alfred Ward, 24, a paramedic who died with four others in the E-Med Rescue24 air ambulance Cessna 441 Conquest V5-NRS plane crash at Maastricht Wine Farm in Durbanville on August 16, says reports carried by News24 that his son would be buried this weekend are untrue.

Historic Witbooi house burns down

A historic house owned by the Witbooi family in Gibeon burnt down midday on Monday, destroying many photos, historical documents and memorabilia.
The house is more than 85 years old and was first occupied by the parents of liberation struggle icon and former deputy prime minister, the late Reverend Hendrik Witbooi.
Lucia Witbooi, Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, and member of the Witbooi family, said the loss of the house was met with great sorrow by the family and the community at large.

Namibia unhappy with Botswana’s shooting of poachers

The Namibian government wants to find a solution to what it describes as the “disturbing problem” of Botswana’s shoot-to-kill policy with regard to poachers.
According to the government, this policy has resulted in deaths that could have been prevented.
Two Namibians suspected of being ivory poachers were shot and killed earlier this year close to the Botswana border by the Botswana Defence Force.

Some Zimbabwean nationals in Windhoek are claiming that the Namibian Police are victimising them by carry out unlawful arrests on them.
According to some of the Zimbabweans that Namibian Sun spoke to, the police have made them to feel uncomfortable because they are treated like criminals by being arrested and made to sit in police custody for weeks and sometimes even months.
According to a man who chose to be named as Zwelihle, arrests are carried out in their homes as well as the bus terminals at the Soweto market in Katutura where Zimbabwean-bound buses load.

The Transport Commission of Namibia may suspend FlyAfrica’s air service licence after it disregarded the aviation laws of the country and illegally flew passengers to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg from Windhoek last week.
This is according to industry experts who said if flights are operated without the correct paperwork there is a very real risk that the European Union could ban operators flying out of Namibia.

Shebeen-free suburbs possible

President Hage Geingob wants shebeens out of residential areas and closed on Sundays.
Geingob, who addressed Khomas Region residents during one of his town hall meetings at Ramatex, also urged shebeen owners to close their bars during the week because “people work during the week”. Although he condemned shebeens as a social evil, he acknowledged that they are a livelihood for people who have no other income.

Two more black rhinos slaughtered

The slaughter of Namibia’s rhino population continues unabated, with two more black rhinos killed.
The latest poaching of two black rhino bulls in the Epacha Game Reserve last month brought to more than 70 the number of rhinos killed in the country.
The spokesperson of the Namibian Police, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, said the first rhino bull was found at Epacha Farm on August 23 with its horns still intact. It had been fatally wounded and although a veterinarian tried to save the animal it died the following day.

Teacher guilty

In the fourth day of the marathon Caprivi Treason Trial judgement, Judge Elton Hoff found that the State had proven beyond reasonable doubt that a former teacher at Makanga village near Katima Mulilo had provided transport to members of the Caprivi Liberation Army who launched attacks on government installations in that town on August 2, 1999.
Judge Hoff found that Kester Silemu Kabunga only offered bare denial of the testimonies of the witnesses.

Ships warned about carrying Namibian charcoal

Shipowners have been warned to be cautious of carrying containerised charcoal cargo out of Namibia following a recent ship fire.
The warning comes after the container ship Mareno caught fire near Lüderitz at the end of last month.
The Mareno was en route to Lüderitz from Cape Town, but first sailed to Walvis Bay on August 29 where it loaded six containers with Namibian charcoal.

Shot and injured cop arrests two

In an act of rare bravery, a City Police constable found the strength to arrest two men, after he was shot in the leg. Constable Justice Shatipamba was trying to stop a group of suspected robbers when he was shot during the early hours of Saturday morning. City Police spokesperson Cillie Auala said 40-year-old Shatipamba was patrolling the Werner List Street area when he was alerted by members of the public about a group of seven men who were allegedly robbing two people. Zeraeua throne dispute sours

The on-going feud between two groups fighting over the chieftaincy of the Zeraeua Royal House has turned ugly and a request for State House to intervene has been made.
The royal fight resurfaced after allegations from one of the disputants, the Ovakweyuva clan said they want President Geingob to step in as they feel left out and claim justice is being delayed by corrupt individuals involved in the case.

Season openers provide mixed results

The 2015/16 football season officially kicked off at the weekend with United Stars one of the teams to pick up maximum points following wins against Rundu Chiefs and Young Chiefs. United Stars thrashed rivals Rundu Chiefs 4-0 on Saturday before beating new NPL entrants Young Chiefs 1-0 yesterday at the Rundu Sport Stadium.
