Drag racing hits a speed hump

I remember a time when going to a drag racing event (whether it was in Walvis Bay, Windhoek, Rehoboth, or Okahandja) was the ultimate place to be on a weekend. Fun, racing, booze and braai were part of the activities of the day.
Well, for the speed junkies that came to do what they do best at last week Saturday’s event, an absolute disappointing number of people showed up to support our home grown legends.

Bidvest disappointed with lower revenues

Ongoing disputes over fish quota allocations, and last year’s loss of an important local chicken distribution deal, all weighed heavy on the financial performance of Bidvest Namibia this past year.
The diversified group yesterday reported its annual results for the year ended June 30th, including a 4.6% drop in revenues, to N$3.5 billion.
In his presentation to investors and analysts, Bidvest Namibia CEO Sebby Kankondi noted a number of successes over the year, including the recent acquisition of the Novel Motor company and Namibia Bureau de Change.

NCCI raises productivity concerns with Geingob

The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI)’s northern branch has appealed to government to start restricting the pay packages of suspended bosses of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and in so doing, restoring the good reputation of these organizations.
President Hage Geingob and other State officials visited the Oshana Regional Office at the weekend, meeting with business and community members over government’s pending retail sector charter.

Wilson’s death triggers calls for IndyCar safety review

The death of British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has once again raised questions about the safety of motor racing and prompted calls for the introduction of closed cockpits.
IndyCar officials announced this week that Wilson had died from severe head injuries he suffered in a crash at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, the previous day.
Wilson slammed into a wall after he was struck in the helmet by debris from another car he was following.
He was airlifted to hospital but never regained consciousness.

Japan coach Jones to step down after World Cup

The organisation said the 55-year-old Australian, who has been the Brave Blossoms' coach since 2012, will resign on November 1. His contract was due to expire this year.
The decision was approved by the group's board of directors, with Jones also to quit as the director of rugby at Japan's new Super Rugby side.
A new coach will be chosen after the World Cup starting next month, when Japan will accelerate their preparations to host the tournament in 2019.

HH back in the Swapo fold

Former crown prince of Swapo Hidipo Hamutenya, who once observed that it’s cold outside Swapo when Ben Ulenga left in 1999, has re-joined the party barely eight years after leaving it.
Hamutenya, who founded the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) after he jumped ship in 2007, returned to Swapo after being pushed out of his own party.
This decision followed a private dinner at State House with President Hage Geinbob and former Speaker of Parliament Theo-Ben Gurirab.

Who is HH?

Born on June 17, 1939 at Odibo village in the Ohangwena Region, Hidipo Hamutenya is a Namibian politician who played a major role during the liberation struggle. Hamutenya has a number of qualifications in the fields of Journalism, Political Science, History and Development Studies which he obtained at universities around the world. After Namibia’s independence in 1990, Hamutenya served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting until 1993, when he was appointed as Minister of Trade and Industry - a position he held for nine years before he became Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2002. HH departure is no loss - RDP

RDP spokesperson Kashuume Nghiningiluandubo says the party did not suffer any loss when founding president Hidipo Hamutenya resigned in February and describes his subsequent decision to re-join the Swapo Party as falling victim to President Hage Geingob’s charm.
In an interview with Namibian Sun yesterday, Kashume added that he fears that Geingob’s charm would lead to an exodus of opposition members who are desperate for change.

Korean pet butchery in Suiderhof

A Korean construction company based in Suiderhof has made the residential area its dumping ground for discarded animal carcasses and offal.
Namibian Sun was called out early yesterday morning to a construction site at the Suiderhof military base in Windhoek.
A concerned citizen informed the newspaper that animal parts, human faeces, leaking water pipes and general filth lined the outskirts of the construction workers’ barracks.

Massive clean-up at Korean construction site in Suiderhof

A massive clean-up operation apparently took place at the Korean construction company based at the Suiderhof military base late on Friday afternoon.
This follows the article that appeared in Namibian Sun on Friday that exposed animal parts, human faeces, leaking water pipes and general filth adjacent to the construction workers’ barracks.
The company working at the Suiderhof Army base is the North Korean construction company Mansudae Overseas Projects who are apparently building a new headquarters for the Namibian Defence Force.

Red Cross responds to allegations

The Namibian Red Cross Society secretary Ms Dorkas Kapembe-Haiduwa has refuted allegations levelled against the organisation that it has failed to distribute food parcels for the past three years from its headquarters in Windhoek, which ended up rotting in the warehouse.
Responding to an article published by Nambian Sun on August 27, Kapembe-Haiduwa the Red Cross does not distribute food and only does so during drought when food is distributed to soup kitchens in drought stricken areas.

Alleged fraudster will defend himself

Jan Behr, accused of stealing thousands from desperate holiday makers looking for accommodation at the coast, will plead next year when his trial begins on January 16 in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.
According to the state prosecutor Ivann Tjizu, the police have completed their investigations and Behr has been charged with theft under false pretenses. Behr told Magistrate Ingrid Unengu that he will not be appointing counsel but will handle his own defence.

Interpol nabs N$7 million in counterfeit goods

The Head of Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Namibia, Chief Inspector Immanuel Sam said the operation, which took place on Thursday and Friday, targeted brands like Adidas, Nike and Puma among many others, while a number of fake cosmetic products were also confiscated at the towns. The operation, which was a joint venture between Interpol, Nampol, Customs, Immigration as well as prime owners and protectors of the different brands.
During the operation, over 15 000 items valued at N$6.5 million were arrested. Sam said this has been one of their largest operations to date.
