Kiinge Insurance Cup gets winners

Onambula United reserved their best display for the final when they beat Future FC 2-1 to claim the Kiinge Insurance Broker Cup at the David Sheehama sport field at Outapi.
The tournament ended on Sunday with Onambula United and Future having beaten their rivals to reach the final.
The tournament had resumed on Saturday with two quarterfinal matches and the subsequent semi-finals taking place.

Govt pledges support against terrorism

Namibia will support all efforts aimed at ending extremist-inspired conflicts in Africa and throughout the world.
This was said by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during a briefing of the diplomatic corps this week.
This type of conflict has been worsening, especially in Nigeria where the Islamist insurgents Boko Haram have stepped up their attacks since Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in in May, unleashing a wave of violence that has killed more than 800 people in just two months.

DTA speaks out on farm attacks

City responds to commonage farms

A City of Windhoek manager has expressed frustration over the failure of the municipality’s technical department to compile a report on the number of commonage farms around Windhoek.
This follows a Facebook posting this week by the Affirmative Repositioning movement, claiming that people are leasing between 820 and 6 000 hectares of town land for an average price of N$7 000.
According to the municipality’s manager for corporate communications and customer care, Joshua Amukugo, the council gave instruction to have the report compiled two months ago.

Four die in horror crash at Onankali

Four people died in a blaze when a heavy truck collided head-on with a sedan and both caught fire at Onankali village on the Ondangwa-Omuthiya main road on Wednesday evening. According to the Oshikoto Police Commander, Anne-Marie Nainda, the accident happened about 21:30. An Onankali resident told Namibian Sun that he rushed to the scene of the accident and heard those trapped in the burning car screaming for help. “We stood by helplessly as the two vehicles were engulfed by fire,” he said. In an exclusive interview with Namibian Sun, Haufiku shared his frustration with the ‘mess’ at the Okahao State Hospital and the stink in hospital corridors including the toilet next to his own office.
He also vented his frustration about non-performing contractors who fail to deliver and yet are granted new tenders.
According to him, the contractors awarded the tender to build the N$38 million TB ward at Keetmanshoop did substandard work and left the project incomplete. Questionably, the same contractor was assigned the Okahao tender, which Haufiku described as a mess.

Namibian Sun, Cymot donate to Kunene school

Namibian Sun and Cymot have come to the rescue to Omuhonga Primary School after a recent article on the plight of pupils who spend the chilly winter nights out in the open.
Namibian Sun, which is a division of Namibia Media Holdings, joined Cymot and agreed to donate 100 blankets, 25 tents that can accommodate up to four children and a marquee tent to be used as a classroom. The items have a total value of N$98 000.

Food security in the balance

Crop predictions are out and estimates indicate that Namibia’s agricultural production has suffered extensively producing an almost 50% lower harvest compared to last season due to severe drought conditions that have been experienced in the country. Major shortfalls are expected.
However agricultural economist Andre Mouton says there is no reason for immediate concern.

Alfred Angula is a liar - Nafwu

The Namibia Farm Workers Union (Nafwu) has dismissed as false claims by its former Secretary-General Alfred Angula that a meeting took place that allegedly reached an agreement to pay him N$1.18 million.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Nafwu Extraordinary Congress yesterday, newly-elected President Cornelius Ntalemo said they will not entertain the lies being spread by Angula in local media reports.

Air Namibia’s Gsponer out

The recently appointed Air Namibia board of directors has decided not to renew the contract of the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Rene Gsponer.
The Swiss national was appointed on November 4, 2013, with direct management responsibility for the entire airline’s flight operations, maintenance and engineering, as well as airport services.

“Hage’s remarks are laughable”

The weekend passed without any reported incidences of violence as the July 31 Affirmative Repositioning deadline came and went. Across the country, reports were received of the peaceful clearing of land. Nampol members were deployed at Goreangab but the situation was calm and controlled.
In the meantime, the DTA has ridiculed comments made by President Hage Geingob that the Namibian youth will not avail themselves to participate in the Massive Urban Land Servicing Project describing Geingob’s doubt as “laughable and inappropriate”.

State witness hammered over omissions in rhino trial

In the trial involving four Chinese nationals arrested for trying to smuggle 14 rhino horns out of the country, the state witness was hammered during cross examination for omitting certain facts.
Li Zinbing, Li Xiaoliang, Pu Xuexin and Wang Hui appeared in the Windhoek Regional Court at Katutura on Friday. They were arrested on charges of attempting to smuggle rhino horns worth more than N$2,3 million and a leopard skin worth N$50 000 out of the country.

Youngsters impress at Olympia tournament

The Namibian Tennis Association (NTA) held a junior tennis tournament that took place at various tennis courts in Olympia over the weekend.
The event was organised by the Kallie Tennis School (KTS).
A total of 55 players competed in the age groups U-8 to U-18 for valuable ranking points in the NTA junior champion list.
The junior tournament was sponsored by the R&P Fresh Produce company which donated T-shirts to all group finalists.

Mannetti returns for AFCON 2019 mission

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has reappointed Ricardo Mannetti as the Tafel Lager Brave Warriors coach.
The announcement was made yesterday at a packed NFA House.
Mannetti has signed a four-year contract that will run until July 31, 2019.
Mannetti had resigned from his post as Brave Warriors head coach shortly after the team lost 1-0 to Niger in a 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match..
NFA president Frans Mbidi expressed happiness at finally putting the issue to rest.

The local authority stink

Namibia appears to be turning into a sewage-soaked nation – the stench of unhygienic muck and filth, coupled with mountains of dirt and garbage permeating the senses of those who dare to venture into the areas where people are disadvantaged and living a life of poverty and depravation. While on the surface, towns look reasonably clean and pristine, one only needs to wander into the shanty town areas where the poor live in shacks to see the vast difference in basic amenities like the running water, sewerage systems, garbage removal, electricity, etc. Read more about The local authority stink
