Wanderers to take on Rustenburg Impala

Wanderers to take on Rustenburg ImpalaWanderers to take on Rustenburg Impala 0 Namibia’s Wanderers rugby club will be playing their second away match in the Gold Cup when they travel to South Africa to take on Rustenburg Impala tomorrow.

The Namibians are fresh from a home victory – even though it had a sting in the tail – over the Northam Rhinos last weekend.

Wanderers had beaten their visitors 60-29 but the victory has subsequently been marred with reports of an alleged racially charged incident taking centre stage throughout the week.

As a short-term remedy to the situation, the Namibian team has opted to leave Theo Coetzee, the player alleged to have been at the forefront of the fracas, out of their traveling party.

“We have suspended him [Coetzee] for one match as a message for him to improve his overall discipline,” Wanderers chairman Flip Louw told Republikein on Wednesday.

The team will now have to focus on the task ahead as they play an Impala team that has won both of its matches in the Gold Cup so far.

Impala, who lead the group standings, beat Rhinos 46-19 before recording a 29-10 win over Evergreens.

Wanderers are currently in third position and will have to finish among the top two teams to qualify for the quarterfinal playoffs of the competition.

After this weekend’s match, they will have only one game left, hosting Evergreens at their field on 8 October.

The playoffs are scheduled for 15 October.

'Guides need to be rewarded'

'Guides need to be rewarded''Guides need to be rewarded'Paralympic team coach Mike Hamukwaya believes it is important that the guides who help his athletes get rewarded for their work. Coach calls for Paralympic stars’ helpers to be recognised 0 The national Paralympic coach, Mike Hamukwaya, says rewarding a guide runner would serve as motivation to others.

Hamukwaya said he is trying to educate the government and everybody else in the country on the importance of rewarding not only the Paralympic athletes but their guides as well.

In an interview with Namibian Sun on Wednesday, he said the International Paralympic Movement (IPM) has shown the world how it is supposed to be done.

“You have seen it on television when the IPM are awarding the athletes… they always award the guide runner as they try and show to the world how it is supposed to be,” he said.

“People in Namibia only award the athletes so it is like they do not want to award a guide runner and it is for the athlete to decide whether to share with the guide. But then it is not fair because even the medals brought to the country is by both of them,” he said.

He said if the athlete and the guide are rewarded equally it would encourage more athletes to become guide runners.

“So we need to do things the right way, especially for the next Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020 so that by then maybe we will even have 20 guide runners and have an option of selecting the best ones.”

Shares

Gold medallist Ananias Shikongo, who runs in the T11 category of blind athletes, shares his coach’s opinion.

Shikongo said if guides are not rewarded for what they do they are discouraged from continuing and the athletes suffer as a result.

He said he shared a few dollars with guide Sam Shimanda, who he ran with at the All-Africa Games (AAG) last year where they bagged three gold medals.

“I felt that there was a need for me to share with my guide because he did not get anything. But I did not do this alone so I had to share otherwise he will also give up on guiding me,” he said.

Shikongo said he plans to do the same if his long-time guide Even Tjiviju does not get any financial reward for the two medals they won at the 2016 Paralympic Games.

Although athletes received N$60 000 for a gold medal, N$40 000 for silver and N$20 000 for bronze from the AAGs, the guides did not receive anything.

Deputy minister of sports Agnes Tjongarero said when she welcomed the Paralympic team back that the government would fulfil its commitment made to the athletes before they went to the Games.

She said they would later inform the public what kind of reward the athletes would be given.

Rundu Sport Stadium without water, electricity

Rundu Sport Stadium without water, electricityRundu Sport Stadium without water, electricity 0 Grass on the football pitch at the Rundu Sport Stadium in the Kavango East Region is dying after the water supply was cut off about two months ago because the line ministry owed the municipality N$838 303.

The bill had not been paid since the end of 2015, and local sports organisers were forced to stop all events planned at the venue because of the lack of water.

The sports officer in the region, Someno Erastus, said they are in communication with head office to fix the problem.

“We owe a huge amount of money to the town council and they cut off our water.

“I am worried that the grass is going to die and it will take us a long time to get it green again,” he told Nampa on Tuesday.

It is the only sports stadium for the Kavango East and Kavango West regions and can host football, athletics, netball and basketball events.

The stadium this year hosted the annual The Namibian Newspaper Cup, Namibian Police Games, Namibia Correctional Service Games and Namibia Defence Force Games.

Its temporary closure now hampers sports activities in the region.

“The stadium will soon just be dust instead of grass and I am worried that the same will happen to our sports in the region,” said Erastus.

Justice Kavari, a clerk in the sports directorate said the ministry received invoices late but they are working on a plan to fix the problem.

“I remember last year the stadium had a bill of N$100 000 and the directorate might have not settled the current account because invoices were not received and that might have increased to the figure in the picture now,” he said.

Asked about the size of the bill, the Rundu town council’s chief executive officer, Romanus Haironga, said the current bill included penalties.

“If water bills are not settled monthly we always add charges the following month.

“We also charge different rates for different locations, which might also have increased the bill depending on how much water was used on a monthly basis,” Haironga said.

Documents given to Nampa by an inside source show that water usage at the stadium cost N$39 787 in January this year, which dropped to N$27 011 the following month but skyrocketed from March onwards. By June, it stood at N$76 132.

The stadium is now without electricity too. The power supply was suspended on Wednesday because of an outstanding debt of N$59 486 owed to the Northern Regional Electricity Distribution Company. -Nampa

Coaches wary of England job

Coaches wary of England jobCoaches wary of England jobAt least two English Premier League managers have stated that they are not interested in coaching that country’s national team. Mentors distance themselves from top post 0 Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe yesterday ruled himself out of replacing Sam Allardyce as England manager, although he said the "ultimate job" could tempt him later in his career.

Allardyce''s one-game career as England manager came to a humiliating end after just 67 days on Tuesday following controversial comments made to undercover reporters.

The 61-year-old was secretly filmed giving advice on how to circumnavigate transfer rules and mocking England predecessor Roy Hodgson.

Allardyce, appointed England manager in July on a £3 million-a-year-contract (N$54 million), also agreed to travel to Singapore and Hong Kong as an ambassador for their fictitious firm for a fee of £400,000 (N$7.1 million).

England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate has been placed in caretaker charge for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, but Howe, 38, has been touted as a full-time replacement.

Howe was linked with the England job after Hodgson resigned following the team''s embarrassing exit from this year''s European Championships in France at the hands of Iceland.

But he yesterday insisted he wanted to help cement south coast side Bournemouth''s place in the Premier League as he followed United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann in ruling himself out of replacing Allardyce.

"They (the Football Association) haven''t come to me and my message is very similar. I am committed here, I love the job and I have a lot more to do here," Howe said.

"I think I have said in many interviews that the England job is the ultimate job. It''s all hypothetical of course but I could not turn my back on this club.

"It sounds arrogant but I am not interested in the (England) job now, but you never know what will happen in the future."

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew, who played alongside Southgate for the south London club, has also been linked to the England job.

But he insisted he was happy at Selhurst Park.

"Eddie Howe said this morning it was the pinnacle for any Englishman''s career, I agree with that," said Pardew.

"I''m so lucky to have this football club where it is right now, the chairman and I have a great relationship."

Veteran Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, long spoken of as a possible England manager, is out of contract with the Gunners at the end of the season.

"I''ve said many times that my priority has always been Arsenal Football Club and I have to assess how well I do until the end of the season," said the Frenchman.

Lambie ready to play after three months of headaches

Lambie ready to play after three months of headachesLambie ready to play after three months of headaches 0 South Africa fly half Pat Lambie, who woke up with a headache every day for three months after being knocked out against Ireland in June, said he was ready to return against Australia tomorrow.

"I''m thrilled to be back, very excited to be included in the group again. I''ve missed being part of the Springboks, so it is wonderful to be back," Lambie said ahead of the Rugby Championship test at Loftus Versfeld.

"It has been quite frustrating sitting on the side, especially for how long it took to get better again. But thankfully I''ve been looked after well off the field," he told a press conference earlier this week.

Lambie was picked by new coach Allister Coetzee for his first test in charge against Ireland in Cape Town in June but was pole-axed early on by a tackle and has since played a single, provincial rugby match for the Sharks.

He said migraines he had after the knock from Irish flanker CJ Stander left him listless and bereft of energy.

"The thinking was that the trauma and the stress of the knocks against my head triggered a constant or chronic migraine. I had a low grade migraine for, I guess, three months," Lambie said.

"I was waking up every morning with a headache, sore eyes, low energy and really not feeling up to much. But thankfully the doctors looked after me, I saw a few neurologists, had a few courses of medication and I''ve come right now.

"Everyone has cleared me and they''re all happy that I''m playing again."

Lambie might not make the starting line-up but looks likely to play some part in the game, possibly off the bench.

"To me it was always a question of Pat letting me know when he was 100%. As soon as you are cleared and have that confidence back," Coetzee said.

"He is an experienced player in the squad and part of the leadership group. He will be part of the plans going forward this weekend in terms of selection."

Unbeaten records at stake

Unbeaten records at stake Unbeaten records at stake The only teams yet to lose in the English Premier League go head to head on Sunday. Top two clash in English Premier League 0 The English Premier League''s only remaining unbeaten records are on the line on Sunday when Tottenham Hotspur will hope to inflict a dent in Manchester City''s superb start to the campaign.

The City juggernaut had crushed all before them, winning every competitive game they had played this season, until they were held to a surprise 3-3 draw with Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday.

That result, and the way the Scottish side exposed chinks in City''s defensive armour, will have given a boost to Tottenham, fresh from a crucial Champions League win in Moscow, before England''s top two clash at White Hart Lane.

Pep Guardiola''s impressive start at the Etihad Stadium has made City many people''s favourites for the title, and Spurs will need all the grit they showed in their victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday to avoid losing further ground to their opponents.

Both sides will be without key players for Sunday''s clash.

Harry Kane, Spurs top scorer for the past two seasons, is expected to be out for at least another month after suffering ankle ligament damage against Sunderland on September 18 - although Son Heung-min''s stunning form has ensured they have not missed him as much as fans feared.

The South Korean scored his fifth goal in five games in Spurs'' 1-0 win in Moscow.

"He is on fire," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino told reporters.

"To keep this form is very important for us."

City, four points clear of their opponents and out to avenge their double defeat to Spurs in the league last season, will also be without several important players, including Vincent Kompany and Kevin De Bruyne, who were injured in last Saturday''s 3-1 Premier League win over Swansea City.

Arsenal, who are third, and Liverpool (fourth) will both expect to maintain their challenges away to struggling sides.

Arsene Wenger''s men will be bidding for their fifth league win in a row on Sunday at newly promoted Burnley, who won for only the second time this season on Monday when they beat Watford.

Swansea City beat Liverpool 3-1 at home last season, but with Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin under pressure following their poor start to the campaign and Liverpool revitalised under Juergen Klopp, they will be hard-pushed to match that in the corresponding fixture tomorrow.

Frustrated Perez threatens to walk away

Frustrated Perez threatens to walk awayFrustrated Perez threatens to walk away 0 Sergio Perez yesterday warned that he could walk away from Formula One if he cannot secure a seat for the 2017 season by next week''s Japanese Grand Prix.

Perez indicated at the Singapore Grand Prix two weeks ago that he would like to stay with Force India for 2017, after being sounded out by Renault.

But the Mexican is frustrated at delays in striking a deal.

"I believe that next week is crucial to sort out my future, so by next week I need to know if the option remains or if I have to look somewhere else (other than Formula One)," Perez told reporters ahead of Sunday''s Malaysian Grand Prix.

"At the moment I hope it works out with one team, and if it doesn''t then by next week we will have to look at something else. Obviously I want to keep my career in Formula One going, but I cannot wait much longer."

Perez was asked about rumours that the deal has been delayed because he only wants a one-year deal, to keep his options open for a move to the works-backed Renault team for 2018.

"Other people are saying that," Perez replied.

"But for me it''s more important going into the next generation of cars with a team I know, and with people around me I know, and build from that.

"I don''t even know where I''ll be in 2017, so 2018 is miles ahead."

Curbing comparison

Curbing comparisonCurbing comparison 0 The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) will host a German basketball commissioner who is visiting the country for three days to familiarise himself with how the game is run here.

The president of the Basketball Association of Baden-Wuerttemberg (BBW), Joachim Spägele, has been assigned as a basketball commissioner to Namibia to engage NBF and other stakeholders in basketball development affairs.

Spägele touched down in Namibia on July 25 and is expected to leave tomorrow. Among other things, he will discuss the way forward with the NBF.

He will also be paying a courtesy visit to the Sports Commission and the Directorate of Sport to discuss cooperation to develop the game of basketball in Namibia.

Speaking to Nampa last Thursday, NBF president Andrew Masongo said Spägele’s visit would mean a lot to Namibian basketball, as they expected to learn a lot from him during his three-day visit.

“We had a memorandum of understanding with the German Basketball Federation (Deutscher Basketball Bund – DBB), which ended last year.

“They have now assigned someone to come and observe on what never worked between the two organisations and how we can improve on their support in going forward,” he said.

He added that the BBW would be engaging with the NBF from the grassroots level, which is the most important part of any sport development programme.

Mentally disturbing each other

$

Mentally disturbing each otherMentally disturbing each other 0 It is a very normal occurrence for individuals to experience feelings of anxiety when faced with everyday life issues from making important decisions, to writing tests or problems at one’s place of work. Feeling anxious is a very natural emotion which we are all familiar with. However, anxiety disorders are very real mental disorders which cause so much distress that it interferes with normal life. The different types of anxiety disorders that exist are panic disorders, generalised anxiety disorder, phobias and social anxiety disorder. The symptoms that can be experienced by someone suffering from anxiety orders may include trouble sleeping, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dry mouth, nausea and muscle tension, amongst other things. Now although I haven’t personally been clinically diagnosed, I have found myself at the centre of more panic attacks mostly caused by social anxiety, than I care to mention and it is safe to say that it is the most hellish experience I’ve ever had. The worst thing about suffering from certain types of mental disorders such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders and eating disorders, is that the people in your environment have a hand at causing you to ‘lose it!’ People can be so insensitive, inconsiderate and downright mean that their behaviour just pushes others off the proverbial edge. As social beings, we must acknowledge that our actions heavily affect one another especially in terms of psychological, emotional and mental wellbeing. Move with the awareness that you could be setting off anxiety and panic attacks and making others pull the triggers of the proverbial guns that they are holding to their heads, you might be the cause of making someone cry themselves to sleep and depriving them of their manic states which they so desperately crave in order to balance out the other side of the bi-polar coin!!!! You could be ruining lives! So try to be a better person and stop breaking broken people! I’m not saying that these mental illnesses are caused by our social interactions with each other, that would be crazy, pun intended. However we must recognise that mental disorders and disturbances are multidimensional and extremely dynamic, as are the causal factors. Causation can occur as a result of both nature (our genetic makeup) and nurture (our upbringing and environment), of which the latter is the only one we have some sort of control over. A word to the wise: You never know what type of hell a person is going through so try to be a decent human being as best you can! The good news about anxiety disorders is that they mostly do get better with the right type of treatment which depends on the type of anxiety disorder you have. Medications which can relieve symptoms and psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy which teaches people productive ways of thinking, behaving and reacting to anxiety-inducing and fearful situations are available. Other alternative methods or complementary treatments of coping with anxiety or anxiety disorders are meditation, yoga, massage therapy and naturopathic medicines.

Anti-graft agency raids six cargo companies

Anti-graft agency raids six cargo companiesAnti-graft agency raids six cargo companiesThe South African Competition Commission on Wednesday conducted raids at the premises of six cargo shipping companies in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Price-gouging cartel suspected 0 South Africa’s Competition Commission said it was conducting a search-and-seizure operation at the premises of Hamburg Sud South Africa, Maersk South Africa, Safmarine, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Pacific International Line South Africa and CMA CGM Shipping Agencies South Africa.

The commission said it had reasonable grounds to suspect that the companies had engaged in collusive practices to, among other things, fix the incremental rates for the shipment of cargo from Asia to South Africa in contravention of the Competition Act.

It said the search-and-seizure operation was conducted as part of an ongoing investigation that it initiated based on information from a member of the public.

Commission investigators seized documents and electronic data, which will be analysed together with other information gathered to determine whether these companies have contravened the Competition Act.

Maersk spokesman Michael Christian Storgaard confirmed the raid and said the company had offered its cooperation with the commission.

“We can confirm that the South African Competition Commission is carrying out an unannounced inspection in our Maersk Line and Safmarine offices in South Africa.

“The fact that such inspections are carried out does not mean that a company has engaged in anti-competitive behaviour, nor does it prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself. Unannounced inspections are often a preliminary step in investigations into suspected infringements of competition rules. As the investigation is ongoing, we cannot share further details at this point,” said Storgaard.

Attempts to get comment from the other companies were unsuccessful while Allan Botha, finance general manager at Pacific International Line South Africa, declined to comment.

The companies under investigation were involved in the transportation of cargo for import and export purposes across the globe, including South Africa.

“They use large metal containers as packaging crates and in-transit warehouses to store and transport general cargo such as frozen foods, garments and footwear. The customers of these companies are mainly clearing and freight-forwarding agents,” the commission said.

It said it had obtained warrants authorising it to search the premises at the Western Cape High Court and Pietermaritzburg High Court as it suspected collusion among the companies.

The operation was conducted with due regard to the rights of all the affected persons.

“South Africa is a strategic hub for the trade of goods in and out of the Southern African region. Any cartel by shipping lines in this region results in inflated prices for cargo transportation. Cartels of this nature increase the costs of trading in the region and render the region uncompetitive in the world markets. Such cartels have the effect of significantly derailing the economic growth of the region,” said the commissioner of the Competition Commission, Tembinkosi Bonakele.

The operation was conducted with due regard to the rights of all the affected persons, Bonakele said.

Egypt wants second tranches of global loansEgypt wants second tranches of global loans 0 Egypt wants to receive its second tranches of World Bank and African Development Bank (ADB) loans before the end of this year, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail told Reuters yesterday.

Egypt received US$1 billion (N$13.6 billion) earlier this month, the first tranche of a US$3 billion (N$40.8 billion) three-year loan from the World Bank aimed at supporting the government’s economic reform programme. It also received US$500 million (N$6.8 billion) from the ADB, the first tranche of a US$1.5 billion (N$20.4 billion) package. It is due to receive the second US$500 million tranche by the end of the year.

Asked if the second tranches would be received before the end of the year, “we are seeking for it to (arrive) before then,” Ismail said.

Aunty NangyAunty Nangy 0 I tell him lies

Dear Aunty Nangy

I’m a 14-year-old girl dating a guy who is 20 years old. We love each other very much and we promised each other to be together for ever. The problem is he is truthful and I used to tell him lies. Aunty, please help me, what can I do for me to open my heart to tell him the truth?

At 14, you are still in your teens’ infancy and I doubt if the way you feel about this guy is permanent. Biologically, at this age you are at, hormones can wreak havoc and when most teenagers like you can stray for good. You are too young to be thinking about seriousness in a relationship so take it easy. I don’t know how I am supposed to advise you concerning your confession about telling lies. How serious are the lies and unless you say what lies you have told your boyfriend then I cannot help you. Aunty Nangy is not a prophetess.

I love both men

Auntie Nangy

I have a big problem. I am in love with two men. One is from my home village and my parents know him. It’s hard to choose who I should take and they are all serious.

Yes, you have a big problem especially if all of them are serious. It is very sad and worrisome that you seem unaware of the seriousness of the problem that you are facing. You put yourself at risk of sex and gender-based violence the day these men will know that they are in love with the same woman. Surely, one of them is better than the other one way or the other. Don’t say Aunty didn’t warn you. Act now before we write ‘Rest in Peace’ in your obituary.

She sleeps around

Dear Auntie Nangy

I am a 24-year-old guy and I have a lady who just sleeps around and she tells me that she is my girlfriend. Please Auntie, help me please. She is 40 years old. I need help.

I hope you are clever enough to be using protection because if it is true that she dishes out her cookie like that, then you are at risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. You are still young to be subjected to and stick around this generous sugar mummy. Dump this donor and get yourself a decent woman.

HIV positive, shy and afraid

Dear Aunty Nangy

I don’t know where to start. I’m 23 and lost my mum in 2014. I was in a relationship for eight years. We love each other so much. I just recently found out that we are HIV positive and I never told anyone in my family. I feel like telling my dad but we don’t stay together and I want to start with treatment but I’m shy and afraid. I didn’t expect this because my boyfriend is very sick in hospital and his family members are saying that I infected him. But, both of us do not know where it started. I was a blood donor before. Now I can’t because I’m shy of my status. Please help I also have little brothers to take care of.

I am happy that you have come out to ask about your challenge. It is good that you know that you are HIV positive and my advice to you is to share your status with the ones who are close to you. May people suffer from stigma because they do not share their status with close relatives and when the relatives find out they may discriminate against you. You must understand that being HIV positive is no longer a death penalty. Nowadays, there are drugs that you can take and lead a normal life like anybody else. You will still enjoy a healthy sex life and even have children who are HIV negative. All this information you can get when you go the nearest health clinic. Start with treatment as soon as possible. Please don’t be afraid and don’t be shy. People will always find someone to blame. The good thing is both of you are not blaming each other. What is important is for the two of you to get treatment, eat healthy foods and practise safe sex. You don’t have to worry about your little brothers because if you take your medicine correctly and eat healthy foods, then you will live long and never die of HIV.

No equal, no rivalNo equal, no rival 0 One night, three venues, one building and six DJs underground and rooftop.

Definitely, not an event to be missed this weekend.

The underground first car lot meet in Namibia is the biggest and most anticipated event that will have wheels lovers drooling over the 100 cars that will be showcased at the meet.

The car entries will be from all corners of Namibia from the coast to the eastern parts.

The competition will look for the best auto styled, spray paint details, the best super bike just to mention a few.

All the funds raised from the event will go to the We Care Trust automatic school for young Namibians that have realised their talent early enough to chase it already. The school will have mechanic related modules and lessons that will help start their careers.

“The learners will come in from the age of nine when they have learned how to read and write.

Not everyone can meet university entrance requirements so, the We Care Trust is an organisation that caters for them,” said Alois Greifeneder the organiser of the event. Alois started his own mechanic worship at home after his mother refused to fund anything not related to university.

Today, he has two workshops under his name and 12 employees he pays every month.

The show will take place at the Khomas Grove mall underground lot and tickets sell at N$100 on Saturday.

“The ticket will give you access to all venues. The event starts as a family event from 15:00 and the after party continues until 04:00. It’s going to be lit,” said Alois.
